Circular asks RTOs to ensure speed-breakers near schools
Special Correspondent
“RTOs should hold meetings with school authorities and educate drivers”
CHENNAI: Regional Transport Officers have been asked to take severe action, including temporarily suspending or cancelling licences of persons involved in an accident, depending on the severity of it.
A circular from the State Transport Commissioner has been sent to all the enforcement officers. It says Regional Transport Officers should lay speed-breakers near schools and install boards with the message ‘School zone, reduce speed.’ RTOs should hold meetings with school authorities and educate drivers who speed or drive carelessly. Severe action should be initiated against violators, the circular said. Motor Vehicle Inspectors and RTOs should ensure that all school buses/vans should bear the board ‘School bus’ in the front and back. If a school hires a vehicle to transport children, then it should carry a board, ‘For school use’, which should be visible and readable. RTOs should ensure the buses carry such boards during inspection and at the time of issuing fitness certificates.
Field officers should ensure that school buses carry medicines and first aid box with equipment.
They should also ensure that grilles are fixed on the windows of these buses, the circular said. Installation of fire extinguishers and mentioning the name and telephone numbers of the school had also been made mandatory, it added.
