Shortage of teachers hits rural students
Staff Reporter
VANIYAMBADI: Rural students in Vellore district suffer from shortage of teaching staff in some schools in the Alangayam union near Vaniyambadi.
Idayampallam in the Alangayam union is one of the villages where the only elementary school is not in a position to cater to the needs of 76 students.
Residents of the village said that the school had a headmaster and only one teacher.
Residents said that the headmaster was suspended about three to four months ago, following complaints lodged by the villagers. Till now the post was lying vacant, they added.
The residents had given a couple of petitions to the authorities concerned to fill the vacancy but no action had been taken. Residents said that a single teacher was now managing 76 students, who were taught through the activity-based learning method.
“No quality education”
“The children do not get quality education and we sometimes think of discontinuing their studies,” some persons lamented.
The teacher often went on leave and the school had to be compulsorily closed several times. “How do you expect our students to study? We are not in a position to guide our children in their studies as most of us do not have even a minimum education background,” some villagers said.
