“People must check Taslima’s sincerity”

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: It is for the people of West Bengal to wait and check the “sincerity” behind the decision of Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen to withdraw portions from her autobiographical novel “Dwikhandita” that have created a controversy, general secretary of the State unit of the Jamait Ulema-e-Hind, Siddiqullah Chowdhury, told The Hindu here on Friday.

Report denied

Denying that he had told a news agency earlier in the day that the author was now “free to return to West Bengal” and that he had “welcomed” Ms. Nasreen’s move, Mr. Chowdhury said: “We will now have to watch her next move.”

“Moreover, it has taken her a long time to decide” to withdraw the controversial portions, he pointed out.

“Matter of concern”

“What is also a matter of concern to us is the motive of those who have been providing support to Ms. Nasreen all this time,” Mr. Chowdhury added.
