Protest against portrait
Chandigarh: The controversial installation of a portrait of the slain Khalistan militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale in the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar by the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal-backed Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandak Committee came under attack from the SAD’s alliance partner BJP and the Opposition Congress.
Senior BJP leader and in-charge of party affairs in the State Balbir Punj asked the SGPC to review the installation of the portrait . He said a large number of Sikhs and other devout people visited the shrine for peace and to seek the blessings of the Gurus. Bhindranwale’s profile did not match with the holy place.
‘Unfortunate’
Punjab Congress president Rajinder Kaur Bhattal described the installation as “unfortunate” and called an urgent meeting of party MLAs and senior Congress leaders here for tomorrow.
The portrait of Bhindranwale, who was killed during “Operation Bluestar” in the Golden Temple to flush out militants in 1984, was put up in a museum in the complex on Thursday. — PTI
