Dyal Singh opposes Metro move

Staff Reporter

DMRC plans to acquire a part of Dyal Singh College

‘DMRC team’s move to survey college land resisted successfully’

‘The Principal has met Land and Urban Development officials’

NEW DELHI: The teachers, students and non-teaching staff of Delhi University’s Dyal Singh College on Lodhi Road who have been agitating against the proposed move by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to acquire part of the college land staged a protest when a DMRC team visited the institution on Friday.

“We successfully resisted the DMRC team’s move to survey our college land. There was no violence at all. We held a peaceful demonstration. In view of a strong protest, they beat a hasty retreat,” claimed Sachin, a faculty member and convenor of the Joint Action Committee that has been formed under the aegis of different unions of teachers, students and non-teaching staff to “protect the interests of the college”.

The committee was set up in September to fight the move to “take over the college land and hamper the interests of the educational community”.

“In May this year, DMRC asked our college through Delhi University to give them a major chunk of our existing playground for the Central Secretariat-Badarpur corridor of Delhi Metro Phase II. They have asked for 2,582 square metres of land on a permanent basis and 4,677 sq. m on a temporary basis,” said Mr. Sachin. The committee had conveyed its demands to the University authorities and DMRC. “The issue was left un-addressed by the people concerned. Our Principal met the officials of the Land and Urban Development Ministry. We demand a hostel be constructed instead.”
