MONEY FROM WASTE: Sea snakes and crabs are nutritious poultry feed. —

PUDUKOTTAI: They are mostly considered as ‘waste marine beings’ in the form of various reptiles and different species of sea-snakes in the coastal part of this district, but are marketed as the best feed at the poultry farms in a distant district. And, the business has proved its viability for several decades.

From Kottaipattinam, about 70 km from here, the ‘waste fish’ ‘waste crab’ and ‘waste snake’ -- as the traders term them from the point of view of their unsuitability for human consumption, find their way to the poultry farms in Namakkal.

About 300 fishermen who venture into sea on alternate days from Kottaipattinam, make it a point to catch the poultry feed, along with their regular catch of edible crabs and fish. The fishermen, immediately after catching the poultry feed, add huge quantity of salt to the harvest to prevent decay and make it more delicious for the broiler hens. On reaching the shore, it is sold at Rs. 1 or Rs. Two a kg, depending upon the quality. A trader in Kottaipattinam, S. Bakkiam (37), says that he has been running the trade for the past 18 years and it has been quite lucrative. On quality assessment, he clarifies that the crabs and small fish free from shells would ensure more weight and attractive feed.

The catch is dried at the sea-shore for a day and sent immediately to Namakkal on alternate days. About 24 tonnes are being despatched to Namakkal and surrounding villages.
