PUDUCHERRY: Jean-Luc Chatelain, seismologist and Research Director at Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD), a French overseas research institution, will address students of Lycee Francaise on December 3 from 8 a.m. According to a press release here, he will present the theory of plate tectonics, explain the seismic activities observed in many areas of the globe, particularly in north India where plates meet. He will also talk about the propagation of seismic waves and the resulting hazards in coastal and urban areas. A method designed by French scientists to provide a comprehensive assessment of urban hazards will also be discussed. Mr. Jean-Luc Chatelain’s talk is being organised as part of a national scientific initiative within the framework of French Science Today, a French Embassy programme. His earlier work dealt with earthquake prediction, mainly based on micro-seismicity behaviour, and is now oriented towards seismic hazard and the use of ambient vibrations (noise) to characterise soil parameters (soil fundamental frequency, seismic waves velocity…) and dynamic parameters of structures in the framework of several international projects in the U.S., South America, Europe and Africa.
