KARUR: Disability did not deter the spirits of the visually challenged participants at the State-level chess tournament conducted by Ugam Trust here recently. The willingness to compete and the determination to succeed were evident. More than 50 players from 13 districts participated in the two-day tournament. WinnerAt the end of six rounds, B. Raj Kumar of Thanjavur won the title, scoring 5.5 points out of a possible six. S.T. Sai Krishna of Chennai and S. Shankar of Vellore finished second and third. “This is for the third year we are conducting the tournament and every time the response has been encouraging. We believe that such tourneys will instil confidence in them,” said managing trustee A. Anandan. Pat for playersArbiter of the tournament A. Dhakshinamoorthy said some of the players, especially the top three, were good enough to compete in the general category. “That will take them to the next level and their efforts will also get instant recognition.” A few months ago, the trust conducted an ‘adapted’ volleyball tournament for the visually challenged. The game is played by rolling the ball under the net. “The trust is planning to conduct a cricket tournament in January next. A host of other programmes are also on the anvil,” said Mr. Anandan. At the valediction, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Karur, E.M. Swaminathan gave away the prizes.
