The show was held to popularise novel flower designs. One would expect flowers to dominate a training session on floral arrangements. But baby corn, peacock feathers, eucalyptus leaves and eggs too vied for space and attention along with gerbera, gladioli and lilies here. The programme was organised by the Calicut Floriculture Society in Kozhikode recently for its members with a view to popularising novel flower arrangements. Teresa Sojan Vellamattom from Kochi led the programme. More than 50 women participated in the programme. Art and moneyThe society also wants to enable women, especially housewives who have time and artistic sensibility, to pursue the activity not only as a hobby, but also as a worthwhile economic venture, says Jaya Ashok Kumar, executive member of the Calicut Floriculture Society. Teresa’s arrangements were noted for the imaginative use of diverse materials including dry and fresh flowers and leaves. A decoration with baby corn and red carnations intermingling with asparagus and palm leaves is for special occasions. Another had golden gerbera and peacock feathers juxtaposed. There are separate arrangements for birthdays, special parties at home and funerals, explains Roopa Venugopal, a noted florist in the city. Cynthia Thomas, Prisita Divakaran, Shantamma John and Shyama Chandran who participated in the training say that the arrangements here are different. Calicut Floriculture Society has 250-odd members and is engaged in encouraging growing of flowers and related activity among women. Maleeha Raghaviah
