‘Finance company’ owner beaten up

BERHAMPUR: A group of women identified and beat up an alleged cheat at Bhanjanagar in Ganjam district on Saturday night.

Antarjami Pani had opened a ‘finance company’ at Badakodanda village on the outskirts of Bhanjanagar a year ago. Pani was a resident of Nayagarh district. With promise of making deposited money five times in just five years he and his agents had managed to collect a large amount of cash from gullible depositors, who were mostly women.

Later he had escaped with the cash collected, it was alleged. It is alleged that through similar modus operandi he had also escaped with money collected from some other areas of Orissa. His house in Bhubaneswar was also raided several times by police to arrest him. But he had managed to dodge the police.

On Saturday night he along with his wife and father had reached Bhanjanagar for some work. It is suspected that he had come to arrange bail for himself and his wife in relation to the cheating cases pending against him at Bhanjanagar police station. But a woman cheated by him could identify him. She called up other persons allegedly cheated by him. They nabbed Pani and beat him up ruthlessly. But his wife and father managed to escape. Police rescued Pani from the clutches of angry mob of women to save him from lethal injury. He was arrested.
