Sundergarh and Rourkela police districts redone

Correspondent

Crime control and convenience of people are the objectives of the exercise

10 police stations of Sundergarh are now under the control of Rourkela

CUTTACK: The Orissa police have effected a major administrative reorganisation of two important police districts in northern part of the State bordering Jharkhand.

As many as 10 police stations of Sundergarh would now come under the administrative control of Rourkela police district, said a Press release issued by the state police headquarters here on Saturday.

The release said in view of law and order situation, crime control and for the convenience of local people, the government had reorganized the police setup in these two districts recently.

Long ago, the Sundergarh revenue district had only one superintendent of police.

Later, after establishment of Rourkela Steel Plant and increase in population, the Roukela police district was carved out from Sundergarh in April 1962 and the industrial belt having 11 police stations was brought under a separate SP.

However, the new setup had some inherent problems, as 10 police stations in Bisra, Bonai and Brahmanitaranga sub-division of Sundergarh districts were difficult to supervise because of their distance from the district headquarters.

There was a constant demand from locals to reorganize the police districts afresh.

For a better management of police administration, the government has now agreed to bring the 10 police stations of the three subdivisions of Sundergarh under the administrative control Rourkela police districts.

The release informed that Rourkela police district now headed by Ravi Kanth as its SP would have 21 police stations under it.

While the Sundergarh police district where Praveen Kumar is posted as SP would have only 13 police stations under it. After the reorganization, police stations such as Sector-3, Sector-7, Sector-15, Sector-19, Plant site, Uditnagar, Bondamunda, Tangarpalli, Raghunathpalli, Lathikata, Mahila PS, Bishra, Brahmanitaranga, Rurundia, Lahunipada, Bonei, Banki, K Bolang, Koida, Tikayatpalli and Mahulipada would now function under the control of Rourkela SP.

Similarly, police stations such as Sundergarh Town, Sadar, Bhasma, Talasara, Lephripada, Hemagiri, Kinjirikela, Badagaon, Kutra, Rajgangpur, Biramitrapur, Raiboga and Hatibari would remain under the Sundergarh SP, the release added.
