Thief held, valuables restored to Russian pilgrim

The police said K. Saravanan (23), a resident of Bhawaji Nagar II Street in Tiruvannamalai, stole a bag containing $1000, a mobile phone, a camera and a passport from the room of Tamurka Galena (45) of Moscow, when she was sleeping in the room, keeping the door open. On hearing the sound, she woke up and tried to search for the culprit, who escaped after knocking down a old woman staying at the ashram. He took away the valuables and jettisoned the bag at the back of the building.
On a complaint, Superintendent of Police V. Balakrishnan and his team nabbed Saravanan at his house on Saturday.
The police recovered the stolen articles and restored them to the tourist, who along with 14 other pilgrims from her country, was to leave for Puttaparthi on Saturday night.
