Rs.1,435.04-crore plan for Tirunelveli

TIRUNELVELI: The recently released Potential Linked Credit Plan for the district for the year 2008–2009 by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has envisaged a credit potential of Rs. 1,435.04 crore.

Releasing the Potential Linked Credit Plan, the Collector, G. Prakash, said the plan had been prepared based on the assessment of the exploitable potential in various sectors such as agriculture, allied activities, non-farm and other priority sectors.

Potential under various activities / sub-sectors in the district for 2008 – 2009 had been assessed for each sector, keeping in view of overall potential for the sectors / activities, sectoral, general and social infrastructure and processing / marketing facilities available and the gap, constraining the development of respective sectors and the past trends in flow of credit.

Corp loans

Crop loans and marketing credit to the tune of Rs. 392.17 crore would be given while agriculture term loan of Rs. 182.66 crore disbursed during the next fiscal.

The agriculture term loan comprised minor irrigation (Rs. 18.01 crore), land development (Rs. 15.71 crore), farm mechanisation (Rs. 26.19 crore), plantation / horticulture (Rs. 32.80 crore), allied activities (Rs. 89.92 crore) such as dairy, poultry, sheep and goat rearing, fisheries etc.

For rural non-farm sector, Rs. 200.73 crore had been earmarked while the agro and food processing sectors get Rs. 43. 45 crore. Other priority sectors would get Rs. 616.03 crore since the NABARD foresaw huge scope for development in this section.

The Assistant General Manager, NABARD, J. Suresh, and the Lead District Manager, John Felix, spoke.

The Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, F. Abdul Razick, the Project Officer, Mahalir Thittam, Rajarathinam, District Project Manager, ‘Vaazhnthu Kaattuvom’, R. Thangasamy, managers of various banks and officials of government departments attended the release function.
