Officials inspect development activities

Wasteland given to 4,077 labourers

Experts from Department of Agricultural Engineering provide technical assistance

Tuticorin: A team of officials from the Departments of Agriculture and Agriculture Engineering randomly inspected development activities taken up on 6,391.47 acres of wasteland distributed to 4,077 landless agricultural labourers under the free land scheme of the government, on Saturday.

S. Arumugam, Joint Director of Agriculture, who led the team, said that of the total 6,391.47 acres distributed under the scheme, land development activities such as clearing of wildly grown Prosophis Juliflora plants and shaping of plot were carried out on 3,211.90 acres at a cost of Rs.44.37 lakh allocated by the District Watershed Development Agency. The technical assistance for land development was provided by the experts from the Department of Agricultural Engineering.

Mr. Arumugam said that crops like black gram, green gram and sunflower were being raised on 3,887.78 acres.

Likewise, horticulture crops like guava, mango, sapota and amla were being raised on another 86.26 acres at Chettikurichi, Chinnamalaikundru, Pidaneri and Manchanayakanpatti, using a cluster-based approach. “As an intercrop, pulses were being raised on plots where the horticulture crops were grown,” he said.

I. D’ Cruz Mohanasundar, Executive Engineer, Agricultural Engineering Department, I. Joseph, Agricultural Officer, and officials were present.
