Divine bovine: Sri Viswesh Theertha Swamiji, head of the Pejawar Math, Udipi, giving message after inaugurating the three-day national conference on ‘Vande Go Matharam’ in Tirupati on Saturday. TIRUPATI: The three-day national conference ‘Vande Go Matharam’ jointly being organised by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams and the Chennai-based Sri Bhashyakara Charitable Trust got off to a devotional start here. The meet being attended by spiritualists, veterinary scientists and ‘go shala’ organisers underscored the need not only to spread the divine glory of the ‘mother cow’ (Go Matha) but also to provide an economic dimension to the task of protecting and sustaining the national cow wealth, that too the desi (indigenous) cattle breeds. Inaugurating the conference, the chief pontiff of Sri Pejawar Mutt, Udipi, Sri Viswesh Theertha Swamiji described the meet as timely given the disgrace and destruction to which the cattle wealth was now being subjected to. He made a significant suggestion that instead of tiger , cow be conferred the status national animal. . Prasanna Venkatachariar Chathurvedi, managing trustee of Sri Bhashyakara Charitable Trust, which co-sponsored the meet, described cow as the divine companion of human beings and quoted even westerners expressing similar sentiments. He expressed his anguish that by slaughtering cows, and exporting beef, blood, bones and leather, the country earned $ 1.7 billion.
