Jamal Mohammed, Union Christian bag titles

KOCHI: Jamal Mohammed College (Tiruchi) men and host Union Christian women won the 16th Dr A.K. Baby South India inter-collegiate hockey titles here on Saturday.

In the finals, Jamal Mohammed defeated LNCPE (Thiruvananthapuram) by a solitary goal scored by R. Manikandan, while the UC College women blanked Government Science and Arts College (Kozhikode) 3-0.

Jamal’s R. Manikandan and UC’s B. Sajila were adjudged the tournament’s best players. The results (all finals): Men: Jamal Mohammed (Tiruchi) 1 (Manikandan 39) bt LNCPE (Thiruvananthapuram) 0.

Women: Union Christian (Aluva) 3 (P.A. Sandhya 2, B. Sajila 27, P.B. Ligi 47) bt Govt. Science and Arts College (Kozhikode) 0.

Pravin hits century

State under-22 star Pravin V. Achuthan hit a quick century (103 off 53 balls) as Oktopals CC, Thrissur, thrashed Ulbhav CC by 113 runs in the Santosh Menon memorial all-Kerala cricket tournament in Thrissur on Saturday.

The scores: Budoline CA, Tsr 193 for five in 25 overs (Hari 75, Gireesh 36) bt Apex CC, Tsr (Anil four for 12).

Oktopals SC, Tsr 291 for three in 30 overs (Pravin V. Achuthan 103, Uvais 62, Abhijeeth Menon 45) bt Ulbhav, Tsr 178 for nine in 30 overs (Nidhin 68).

Adarsh, Anju get top billing

P. Adarsh (Thiruvananthapuram) and Anju K. Thomas (Thiruvananthapuram) were given the top billing in the men’s and women’s sections respectively in the singles event of the 56th Kerala State Table Tennis championships which gets underway at the Jimmy George indoor stadium, Thiruvananthapuram, on Sunday.

More than 375 players will be seen in action during the four-day tournament which will be inaugurated by T.P. Dasan, the Kerala State Sports Council president. Competition will be held in men, women, youth, junior, sub-junior, cadet, mini cadet and veteran categories respectively. The teams from 14 districts will participate in the inter-district team championship. The inter-institution men’s team championship will also be held along with this tournament.

Girideepam in last eight

Host Girideepam entered the quarterfinals in both boys and girls sections of the 17th Girideepam all-India inter-school basketball tournament at the Girideepam floodlit courts, Kottayam, on Saturday.

Apart from Girideepam Bethany, Don Bosco, St. Thomas HSS, SCSHSS, MTHSS, St. Mary’s HSS, Cherupushpam and Leo XIII also entered the quarterfinal stage in the boys’ section. In the girls’ section, Mount Carmel, Kristhu Jyothi, Little Flower GHSS, UHSSS, Cherupushpam, National HSS made the last eight stage.
