Burglars target ATM counter

Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram: An attempt was made to burgle an ATM counter at the State Bank of India (SBI) main branch at Statue in the early hours of Saturday. The police said burglars were not able to lay their hands on cash, though they could open the counter and break the touch-screen teller machine.

The security personnel of an adjacent bank came to know about the burglary attempt by around 5 a.m. They alerted the bank authorities, who informed the city police.

The counter does not have security guards. The burglars might have used ATM cards of the SBI or the State Bank of Travancore to enter it, the police said. The burglary attempt in a high security area and on the busy Mahatma Gandhi Road has come as a shock to the city police. The Secretariat; the office of the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Cantonment; and the City Police Control Room is just a stone’s throw from the counter. The Cantonment police have registered a case.
