It is the fifth annual convocation of NITK, Surathkal ‘Country needs professionals to support growth’
MOMENTOUS: Anil Kakodkar, chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, presenting the certificate to a graduate during the convocation ceremony at NITK, Surathkal, on Saturday. SURATHKAL: “India today holds one of the largest human resource pools of experts in nuclear science and technologies. Our contribution to scientific publications in the area of pressurised heavy water reactors, fast breeder reactors and thorium utilisation technologies is very large, or in some cases, perhaps the largest in the world. The country also needs professionals for supporting the growth of its power programme, which is only going to get bigger by the day,” said Anil Kakodkar, chairman of Atomic Energy Commission and secretary to Government of India’s Department of Atomic Energy, here on Saturday. He was delivering the convocation address at the fifth “Annual Convocation of the National Institute of Technology Kartanataka”, here. Student excellsGraduate Varun Boraiah was the star of the occasion without being present. He received three top awards for academic performance this year. He has been awarded the V.S. Kudva Memorial cash prize for “Best student of final year B.Tech.-Mechanical Engineering”; Surathkal Babu Rao Ranga Kamath Memorial cash prize for the “Top ranking student of B.Tech.-Mechanical Engineering” and the Gold Medal in Technology. While his name will be etched in the institute’s records forever, Mr. Boraiah is currently far away from all the action, doing his post graduation at the University of Berkely in the United States. Prasad Lad, a batch mate and friend of Mr. Boraiah, who was present for his convocation, says: “Mr. Boraiah was not just a serious, academics-driven person. He was the captain of the NITK basketball team and the general secretary of the students’ union”. Nostalgia was writ large on the faces of students who had made their way back to their alma mater perhaps for the final time. Corrections and clarifications
