Panel to look into dispute at inland container depot

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: A committee will study the dispute between labour unions and the container terminal operator India Gateway Terminals Ltd. (IGTL) at the Kochi port and suggest ways to resolve the differences.

The row is over the issue of handling containers at the inland container depot on the port premises.

The committee will comprise two labour trustees of the Cochin Port Trust, Mohammed Haneef and C.D. Nandakumar; a representative of the IGTL; and Cyril C. George, secretary of the trust, a statement from the trust said here on Saturday. The committee will submit its report in two weeks.

The statement said the decision to constitute the committee was taken at a meeting Union Minister for Shipping T.R. Baalu had with Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi; K. Chandran Pillai, MP; Union Secretary for Shipping A.K. Mohapatra; and N. Ramachandran, chairman of the trust; in New Delhi.

The statement said the port management and the IGTL agreed to honour the agreement of January 1984 on the issue of handling containers at the depot.

It was also decided at the meeting that an industrial relations mechanism would be set up to avert flash strikes at the port. Any issue that could not be resolved through decisions by heads of departments would be brought before the Industrial Relations Committee, headed by the Secretary and comprising two labour trustees and the heads of departments concerned. One representative of the trade union concerned will present the grievance, the release said.
