Crops inundated due to water pipeline leakage

Staff Reporter

Water supply to several areas in twin cities to be affected

Damage control: Officials plugging the pipeline leakage that supplies Krishna water to Hyderabad at Ghanapuram in Nalgonda district on Saturday.

NALGONDA: Heavy water leakage from the joint between two pipelines that supply water to Hyderabad created havoc at Ghanapuram Stage of Pedda Adisarlapally mandal on Hyderabad-Nagarjunasagar road late Friday night.

As the water gushed out, the road and the nearby corps were inundated for more than two hours. Traffic on the road came to a standstill even as the officials of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Watery Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) swung into action to stop the supply within no time. Situation was brought under control and repair works launched by Saturday morning.

Collector M. Purushottam Reddy said 30 acres of paddy, groundnut and sweet lemon got damaged due to the sudden flow of water. Sand logged in about six acres of agricultural land making it uncultivable, he said. A team of HMWSSB led by Managing Director K.S. Jawahar Reddy inspected the spot.

Hyderabad Staff Reporter writes: It is not the first time that power failure affected pumping of Krishna water. It has happened at least 15 to 20 times at the Pump House in Kodandapur.

Last night four operating pumps tripped and then one of the capacitors got burnt at Ghanapuram in Nalgonda district. Mr. Jawahar Reddy said a committee has been constituted to assess the damage. The Nagarjuna Constructions Company is executing the Krishna water supply phase II project. It will pay the compensation as the defect liability period is still valid, he said.

Several areas in the twin cities will have delayed or short supply of water. The areas to be affected are: L.B. Nagar, Gaddiannaram Municipal Areas, Balapur, Chandrayangutta, Hyderabad International Airport, Salala Barkas, Maisaram, Rajendranagar Municipality, Prashashan Nagar, Jubilee Hills and Banjara Hills, Madhapur, Serlingampally Municipality, Kukatpally, Borabanda, Balanagar, Sanathnagar, Fatehnagar.
