Children paint a pollution-free world

ON ENVIRONMENT: Posters being collected at a competition organised by an NGO in Puducherry on Saturday.

PUDUCHERRY: The nicely done up Bharathi Park on any morning is a nice place for a stroll or to sit with friends and have a chat.

The park was the perfect setting for a poster painting contest. The stone benches placed all round the park was conveniently chosen by boys to sit and draw, paint and label posters at the poster painting competition held as part of National Environment Month celebrations organised by the Sempadugai Nanneeragam, an NGO.

Over 300 students from government and private schools participated in the competition and drew posters on issues including global warming, climate change, water conservation and environmental protection.

Children had come up with unusual ideas such as a hand holding a blowtorch and heating the earth; a bird having its nest on the ground; hundreds of tiny drops of water coming together to make a mighty ocean and the earth struggling and suffering from pollution. The prize distribution ceremony for the competition was held on Sunday and cash prizes were distributed to 10 children and consolation prizes to 11 children. In the Class VI to VIII category, Bhavesh, a student of Class VIII of Thiru-Vi-Ka Government High School stood first, in the Class IX and X category Vasanthan of the same school came in first and in the class XI and XII category Devadasindu of class XI of St Patrick School stood first.
