PUDUCHERRY: The Director of Medical and Family Welfare Services, Dilip Kumar Baliga, on Saturday urged doctors, especially those in rural areas with poorly-equipped laboratories, to learn common and simple diagnostic methods for infectious diseases. Speaking at the valedictory function of the VI national workshop on ‘Simple diagnostic methods in clinical microbiology’ organised by the Department of Microbiology at JIPMER, Dr. Baliga expressed concern over the increase in cost of treatment, which includes expensive tests for arriving at the diagnosis. According to a press release here from S.C. Parija, Director and Head of Microbiology, faculty members gave lectures and hands-on-training to participants in 24 modules of clinical microbiology. They also sensitised the participants on the neglect of widely prevalent diseases such as filariasis, various aspects in diagnosis of cholera, dangers of diseases transmitted through poultry and molecular diagnosis of amoebiasis. A ‘Microbiology Nite’ was organised on Friday by technical staff of the department during which MBBS and BSc MLT students presented cultural programmes. Two staff members, Dhanasakthivel and Fathima Jayaraman, were presented awards for excellent service, the release added.
