The column “This Day That Age” (The Hindu, November 5, 2007) had this to say about the “Pakistan situation” 50 years ago: “Dr. Khan Sahib, president of the Republican Party, told a group of pressmen in Peshawar on November 2 that there was not a semblance of democracy in Pakistan and the so-called leaders who seek shelter under the name of democracy are really afraid of introducing it in the country because none of them will retain his position when real democracy takes the place of present mock democracy.....” That was then – a full 50 years ago. Courier service?I booked a packet containing some emergency medicines to be delivered to my father at Tiruvalla, Kerala, through Professional Courier (Receipt No. 142745659) on November 21. On November 24, a person from their Tiruvalla branch office rang up my father and very rudely told him that his parcel had come and if he wanted it, he would have to come to the office and collect it from there; else it would be sent back to the sender. Now this certainly is not the kind of service one expects of a courier service that is paid for home delivery. My father is 77-year-old and ailing. Luckily my brother was home then and he went to collect the parcel from the courier branch, which is barely 3 km from our house. The medicines were sent from Delhi not because they are not available there but because my father being an asthma patient cannot go to the market to buy them. I, therefore, request the authorities concerned to suitably punish the officials for this misbehaviour and brazen deficiency of service and also tender an apology to my father for the same. No, Chief MinisterIn reply to a question by Karan Thapar in a TV programme recently, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit pleaded helplessness to control the rash behaviour of the Capital’s killer Blueline buses since the authorities are unable to trace the real owners of these buses what with licences changing hands all the time. It is pathetic that the Chief Minister of Delhi pleads her inability to act when precious lives are being lost daily. Already this year more than a hundred lives have been lost. What kind of governance is this under the very nose of the Union Home Minister and the Union Cabinet? Is this not a fit case to be handed over by the Administration to the President to set things right? Let not more deaths take place. G. M. Hello, MTNL….I registered a complaint about my MTNL landline phone connection, which was lying dead, with the centralised complaint centre number 198 (Complaint No.963) on November 10. On November 12, a linesman came around 4-50 p.m. and made an attempt to solve the problem. Unable to do so, he left saying he would return the next day around 11 a.m. When no one turned up till late in the afternoon on the given day, I called the telephone exchange to find out why my complaint was not being attended to. I was assured that it would be dealt with immediately, but no one came after that. On November 14, after waiting for a linesman till 1 p.m., I called the complaint redress service for my exchange at 2275-2198 and was amazed to discover that my complaint No.963 had been removed from the system even while it was in fact still pending. I registered a new complaint (No.679), but how is it that my original complaint was removed from the MTNL computer system? Mr. Vashisht at my local MTNL office (Lane 10, Shashi Garden, Delhi) tried to give me a reason for this. He told me point blank that if a complainant was not at home when the linesman comes, the complaint is removed from the system even if it has not been resolved. And this despite my not having been given any time slot by the linesman! Do the MTNL authorities expect the consumer to sit at home till his phone is fixed? And in any case I for one had been home during that period. My problem was finally resolved on November 14 after I made a fuss at our local MTNL office. Railways’ waysOut of nine South-bound super fast express trains originating from New Delhi, only five are provided with AC First Class coaches. No such coaches are attached to Kerala Express, Mangala Express, Karnataka Express and Dakshin Express. Why so? In public interest and to maintain uniformity, the Railway Minister / Railway Board should end this disparity at once by attaching AC First Class coaches to these four trains as well. K. S.
