Assistance for poor students

Sir, — Higher education is becoming unaffordable for poor students. It is desired that financial assistance is extended to them at the college-level.

A corpus fund can be created at every educational institution to be utilised to extend the financial assistance to poor students by way of loans. Contributions, in the form of donations from corporate sector and individuals, can be accepted by the college for its corpus fund. Income tax exemption should be extended to such donations. Repayment can be fixed to commence after they become employed.

The committee to be formed to decide on the eligibility and related issues of a student’s loan application can be headed by the principal of the college, with heads of various departments as members to assist him.

Sir, — The post office was closed on November 24 on account of Guru Nanak’s birth anniversary. But many people were not aware of this and hence were put to lot of inconvenience.I request that list of holidays be notified at the post offices for the convenience of customers.
