Government to convene meeting on Alind crisis

Staff Reporter

Minister’s promise to MLA and employees’ association

Memorandum submitted to Minister recently

Sabotage of new management’s efforts alleged

ALAPPUZHA: The State government is planning to convene a meeting shortly to sort out the present crisis in the switchgear division of Aluminum Industries Limited (Alind) in Mannar in Alappuzha district.

According to a release issued by Chengannur MLA P.C. Vishnunath and Alind Switchgear Employees Association, Industries Minister Elamaram Karim had assured them of such a meeting after they submitted a memorandum to the Minister recently.

The release said that a few vested interests, with support from the previous management were trying to sabotage the efforts of the new management, the Somania Group, and thus derailing the division’s attempts to come out of the dumps.

The new management had taken over with the assurance that remunerations of the workers would be enhanced as soon as production improved. However, the payment of salaries was in a crisis and the workers were waiting for salary arrears of two months, association president Mannar Abdul Latheef said.

The State government would have to interfere and ensure that thousands of families, whose livelihood depended upon the company, were not put to further misery, Mr. Vishnunath said.
