PWD will construct it at the cost of Rs. 25 lakh Site identified near panchayat office NATRAMPALLI: A market complex will come up shortly to accommodate vegetable vendors of Natrampalli near Vaniyambadi. According to sources, roadside vegetable shops were evicted from Natrampalli Highways Road to avert traffic snarls. MLA N.K. Suriya Kumar had permitted them to put up their shops outside his office. . Sources said that the Highways Department had refused permission to put up shops as the road was too narrow for free movement of vehicles. The Natrampalli Highways Road was prone to accidents and the vendors used to occupy “every bit of the space on the roads.” Before the bypass road was opened, the Natrampalli State Highways Road was the main route to Bangalore. Vehicles from Chennai and other areas passed through this road. The traffic managers were not in a position to streamline the vehicle movement as people thronged the vegetable shops. The problem was more profound during peak hours. The Natrampalli panchayat union too wanted to shift the vegetable vendors to an alternative site, the sources said. Besides, the main drainage canal for Natrampalli passed through the State Highways Road. The vendors often dumped waste into the canal, which led to frequent blocks in the drainage network. As a result, sewage overflowed on the road damaging it. Mr. Kumar said that he had requested the State Highways Department to reconstruct the drainage network and the work was under way. The MLA said that he had allotted Rs.7 lakh from his fund and the Highways Department would spend Rs.5 lakh for reconstructing the network. This was also one of the reasons the vendors were not allowed to put up their shops along the roadside. An alternative site for the vendors had also been identified, he said. There was a large area near the panchayat union office and a complex would be constructed there soon. A proposal had been worked out to construct the complex where living rooms would be available for a monthly rent. Mr. Kumar said that the PWD would construct the complex at an estimated cost of Rs. 25 lakh. The construction would be funded through the MLA fund.
