Action plan to ensure drinking water prepared Water from the Yagachi river to be used HASSAN: The State Government has sanctioned 26 primary health centres, to be set up in Hassan district, zilla panchayat president C.N. Balakrishna has said. Speaking to presspersons here on Saturday, he said that there were 76 posts of medical officers vacant, including those of 30 specialists. Although applications had been called for, the response had been minimal. The appointment of Ayurveda doctors was also under consideration, he said. Hospital buildingsMr. Balakrishna said that out of 74 hospitals in the district, 70 had new buildings, which would become hospitals only after the requisite infrastructure was provided. “There is no shortage of medicines in the district,” he said, but added that anti-rabies vaccines were in short supply, for which efforts were being made for procurement. Rs. 15 crore releasedMr. Balakrishna said the Government had released Rs. 15 crore for providing permanent drinking water supply to 45 fluoride-affected villages in Arsikere and Chennaraypatna taluks. He said the zilla panchayat had sent a proposal to the Union Government urging release of Rs. 50 crore under the Rajiv Gandhi Drinking Water Mission to ensure clean drinking water to fluoride-affected villages. Towards the first instalment, Rs. 15 crore had been released. The villages would get water from the Yagachi and tenders were being finalised, he said. Development work would begin within a month. Project costMr. Balakrishna said that in addition to this, an action plan had been prepared to provide drinking water to villages. The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 18 crore. The Government had also sanctioned Rs 3.5 crore to implement the National Food for Work Scheme in the district. Zilla panchayat Deputy Secretary R.G. Naik and district health officer Nagaraja Rao were present.
