Rehabilitation centre awaiting funds

BIDAR: Non-release of grants by the Union Government has hit the activities of the District Disability Rehabilitation Centre here.

The rehabilitation centre was inaugurated in 2006 at Naubad to help disabled persons to avail themselves of artificial limbs, hearing and other aids.

The purpose of the having the rehabilitation centre here was to avoid the delay in the distribution of aids to disabled persons.

Release of funds to the rehabilitation centre here will enable the officials to conduct a survey of disabled persons in the district and take up activities for their welfare.

According to an estimation, there are around 35,000 disabled persons in Bidar district.

The officials told The Hindu that the delay in getting grants from the Union Government had hindered distribution of special aids to disabled persons in the district.

A proposal seeking funds to the rehabilitation centre had been submitted to the Union Government twice, the officials said.

They would send a proposal again to the Union Government at the earliest, the officials said.
