AIDS information on visual media suggested

Special Correspondent

SHIKARIPUR (SHIMOGA DISTRICT): Information on prevention and spread of HIV/AIDS should be disseminated to people through visual media, tahsildar Y.S. Mallikarjun has said.

Inaugurating “World AIDS Day and Bhava Geethe Bimba”, a programme organised jointly by Sunna Educational and Charitable Trust, Shikaripur Taluk Kannada Sahitya Parishat and the Shikaripur Taluk Journalists’ Association at Jubeda Women’s College of Education, he said that it was important to convey to the people that AIDS was not a communicable or contagious disease.

It must be ensured that persons living with HIV were extended necessary support and treatment so that they could spend the rest of their life peacefully.

Amjad Hussain Hafeez Karnataki, secretary of Sunna Educational and Charitable Trust, said that it was unfortunate that HIV continued to spread in India despite technological improvements.

He stressed the need for involvement of socio-cultural and educational institutions in AIDS awareness programmes as it was not possible for the government alone to keep it under check.

Journalist Deepak Sagar suggested that efforts should be taken to create awareness on HIV/AIDS through cultural programmes such as Yakshagana and folk music which had a wider reach.
