Maoists told to introspect

Bandh observed as a mark of respect


MAHBUBNAGAR: The last rites of Panthu Naik, Mandal Parishad president, who was shot dead by CPI (Maoist) on Saturday, were performed in his native village of Mysigandi in Amangal mandal, on Sunday.

Earlier, the body was placed in a decorated van and taken out in a procession in the village.

Chintu Naik, the youngest son, lit the pyre as slogans of ‘Panthu Naik amar hai’ rent the air. Prominent among those present were Union Urban Development Minister S. Jaipal Reddy, Ministers K. Jana Reddy , Koneru Ranga Rao, G. Chinna Reddy, Special Representative of Andhra Pradesh in New Delhi Mallu Ravi, MLAs Vamsikrishna (Achampet) and Y. Krishna Reddy (Kalwakurthi). Collector V. Usha Rani, Superintendent of Police Charu Sinha, also paid homage.

A bandh was observed in the mandal headquarter towns of Kalwakurthi, Amangal and Kadtal as a mark of respect.

Mr. Jaipal Reddy condemned the killing by described it as “a heinous crime perpetrated against a weaker sections leader”. . Lambasting the Maoists, he said they had thrown their ideology to the winds by killing a tribal leader. “They should introspect as to who are actually benefiting by their movement”, he said.
