KOCHI: The State has many talented artists, but their creativity is dimmed by their political activism, C.L. Porinchukutty, chairman, Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, has said. He was speaking after the inauguration of the National Art Week celebrations at the Durbar Hall Art Centre here on Saturday. The National Art Week is being jointly organised by the Lalit Kala Akademi and the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi. However, there are artists like C.N. Karunakaran who do not allow their political ideas to affect their works, Mr. Porinchukutty said. C.N. Karunakaran, chairman, Kerala Lalithakala Akademi, presided. Sudhakar Sharma, secretary, and N. Ramachandran, deputy secretary, Lalit Kala Akademi; and Sathyapal, secretary, Kerala Lalithakala Akademi, spoke. The inaugural session was followed by a Carnatic music recital by Sreevalsan J. Menon. Works by 24 artists are being presented during the National Art Week. The artists featured in the exhibition are Tapan Bhowmik, Samir Aich, Abimanue V.G, Jayakumar G, Ramadas Ayanthaya, Mrinmoy Barua, Vibha Galhotra, Tapan Dash, Tapas Konar, B.M. Kamath, Nirmalendu Das, A. Rajeswar Rao, Milan Sharma, K.G. Narendra Babu, Debasish Chakraborty, Arvind Harksihan Suthar, Bipin Shinol, Lochan Upadhyay, Chippa Sudhakar, Kunwarji Dileep Sharma, Babu Xavier, Jayasri Chakraborty, Rini Dhumal and Veejayant Dash. A panel discussion on the topic ‘Limits and legitimacies of theories in art’ was held on Sunday. Suresh Jayaram, H.A. Anil Kumar, Kavita Balakrishnan, K.C. Chitrabhanu, Chandran T.V, Pushkin and C.S. Jayaram will be the panellists. Slide presentations by Benitha Perciyal, Rajasekharan Nair, N.N. Rimzon, Jayakumar G and Alex Mathew and screening of documentary films will also be held. The National Art Week will be on till December 7.
