Government urged to control cement prices
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: The All India Construction Workers Association has urged the Government to take immediate steps to control prices of construction materials, especially cement.
Both State and Central Governments should take steps to increase production and also facilitate the import of cement, said a press release issued after a meeting of the association’s State executive committee in Chennai.
The association requested the State Government to ensure that all workers registered with the State’s Construction Workers Welfare Board were granted subsidies they are entitled to from the day they received membership ID card, in the same way that unorganised workers received their benefits.
The association also demanded that the qualifying age for pension for women workers be brought down from 60 to 50 years and the pension amount increased from Rs. 400 to Rs. 1000 a month.
Compensation for accidental deaths should be raised from Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 2 lakh, and for natural deaths from Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 50,000, the press release said. It also asked for a monsoon season allowance, similar to that for fishermen.
Government thanked
The association thanked the Government for appointing its general secretary M. Paneerselvam to the Tamil Nadu Construction Workers Welfare Board and its president S. Narayanaswamy to the Tamil Nadu Domestic Workers Welfare Board.
