Welcome initiative

Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen has done the right thing in withdrawing the controversial passage from her book Dwikhandita.

Equally welcome is the initiative of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind general secretary Mahmood A. Madani to exhort the leaders of his community to pardon her.

Mr. Madani is right in saying that as Ms Nasreen has withdrawn the objectionable remarks from her book and apologised, “Muslims should follow the path of the Prophet and forgive her.” Leaders should show the right path to the people as Mr. Madani has done and not instigate any meaningless conflict.

It is disheartening to see Ms Nasreen withdraw a few controversial lines from her latest book owing to pressure from all quarters. Better society can never evolve out of a stifled atmosphere and it seems India is moving that way.
