Classics to be translated into tribal language
Luv Puri
Jammu: In a major initiative to widen the access of the tribal population living in the Himalayan belt to foreign languages, 50 rare works in English, Persian and Sanskrit have been selected for translation into Gojri (the language of the Gujjar Tribe).
Dr. Javaid Rahi, Head of the Gojri Wing of Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, said that under this prestigious project, 12 Publications have already been translated into Gojri. These include classics such as Moulana Rumi’s Mathnavi, Gulistan-e-Saddi, Shakespeare’s Othello and King Lear, Sanskrit’s Neelmat Puran, the autobiography of Mahatma Gandhi, My Experiments with Truth, and others.
The project is scheduled to be completed by 2010. It aims to revitalise the art of translation among tribals to give them access to major works in literature.
