Unique festival to revive the dying art forms

Correspondent

MoU is signed between the Cultural Department and Regional College of Management

BHUBANESWAR: Following an MoU signed between the city-based Regional College of Management and the Department of Culture, the city will host a two-day unique festival on the dying art and traditions of Orissa on December 6 and 7 at the Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya auditorium.

Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi Secretary M.N. Satpathy told ‘The Hindu’ that the MoU was signed on the initiative of Culture Secretary Gopinath Mohanty as part of the department’s drive to rope in various cultural and educational organisations and corporate bodies to team up with the resource-starved culture wing of the Government to promote culture.

City-based Bhubaneswar Music Circle and Bengali cultural association ‘Pragati’ have already signed similar MoUs with the government to host monthly cultural events in the capital, it was learnt.

Promotion of culture should not be confined to the government and participation of the people, non-governmental organisations and corporate houses matters a lot, observed Mr. Mohanty. “Our thrust is on promotion of the dying arts traditions of Orissa,” he emphasised.

As per the department’s directive, the Akademi has identified several dying arts forms which will be promoted as per the MoU, Mr. Satpathy said. The list includes the Chhau dance of Nilgiri, Dhumpa of Digapahandi, Ghuduki of Ganjam, Sabda Swar Pata of Sambalpur and Harikatha of Ganjam, he added.

As per the agreement, the Akademi would host the two-day festival of the dying arts traditions of Orissa on Thursday and Friday evenings showcasing Harikatha, Tumpa, Sabda Swar Pata and Ghuduki.

In the next phases, the other styles would be presented.
