Public nuisance: Lorries seen parked near a school blocking the way for students in Aranthangi. ARANTHANGI: Haphazard parking of lorries, matador vans, mini-lorries and other carrier vehicles has been posing both a nuisance and threat to the road-users in Aranthangi. A little space in front of a school or private building is quite enough for the truck drivers and other carrier vehicle operators to park their vehicles. The location of the bus stand and the market in the vicinity adds to the problem particularly on the Old Hospital Road and Taluk Office Road. Efforts taken by the Municipality during 2004-05 did not yield the desired results, due to the rejection of a proposal for setting up a truck shed at the municipal compost yard site on the Pudukottai Road on the grounds that the yard could not be shifted to any other site. “Although Rs.25 lakh was sanctioned for the purpose, it could not be utilised,” says the former chairperson of Aranthangi Municipal council V. Sugantham. The traffic wing of the police has been deploying additional personnel to prevent mishaps in the town to some extent, especially in and around the schools. “Policemen are posted in the morning and evening near the school zones on working days to prevent accidents,” said a police official. The Transport Department sources said that the municipality should identify a site and submit its application for sanctioning the lorry shed. The president of the Aranthangi Chamber of Commerce C. Kailasanathan said that about 300 trucks, mini-vans and other vehicles were parked all over the Aranthangi town.
