Girl killed as tanker hits scooter

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: A seven-year-old girl, a Class II student, was crushed to death and her father was seriously injured when a tanker transporting aviation fuel knocked down their scooter in Indiranagar traffic police station limits on Saturday.

The police said that Aeshna Kashyap was riding pillion with her father Vikas Kumar (36), a software engineer with IBM when around 11.45 a.m. the tanker hit the scooter from behind at BEML gate on Suranjandas Road.

Aeshna fell to the right, and the tanker ran over her, killing her instantaneously, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic-East) M.B. Mallikarjuna Swamy told The Hindu. Mr. Vikas Kumar, who fractured both his legs, has been admitted to hospital. Tanker driver Murali has been arrested. The police went through some anxious moments as the highly inflammable aviation fuel was being transported in the tanker. If an irate public had torched the tanker, the consequences would have been unthinkable, an officer said.

Following the accident, traffic was affected for nearly an hour on the busy Suranjandas Road.
