High drama

The high drama enacted by the opposition parties and the ruling Biju Janata Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party alliance during the winter session of the State Assembly has once again made it very clear that drawing political mileage was the sole aim of our political parties.

The proceedings of the Assembly could not be conducted for the simple reason that the ruling alliance and the opposition could not reach a consensus on the mode in which the House should discuss the issues pertaining to the farmers’ agitation in western Orissa over diversion of Hirakud reservoir water for industries.

The Assembly was adjourned sine die with both sides putting blame on each other for the deadlock that continued for nine days. The whole issue also brought to the fore the inefficiency of the Naveen Patnaik Government in dealing with the situation. Both the ruling parties as well as the opposition are now going to the people telling that the other side was responsible for the early adjournment of the Assembly.

If the rulers themselves failed to resolve an issue that was very much within their control, how can the people of the State have confidence in them remains a big question.

The government, on the other hand, should also stop maintaining double standards.

If it was in a position to provide water from Hirakud reservoir for both farmers and industries, it is high time it should come out with the statistics showing how much water was available and how much would be given to whom.

‘Playing’ politics

At times, the organisers of cultural shows seem to be giving much importance to political leaders at the cost of performers and the audience. These politicians usually use these platforms for their political gains although they have little links with dances, plays or vocal recitals performed on the stage.

The organisers even dare to take a break during the continuing performances to call up the politicians to the stage, who may have come late to the show.

And the politician never forgets to deliver a speech without pondering over the fact that he is disrupting the continuity of a cultural show or a play.

Recently the actors on stage during enactment of a play in the city had stopped their acting in a haste as the organisers preferred to give a chance of delivery of speech to a politician who had failed to reach in time to attend the meeting that preceded the play.

Serve with smile

It seems doctors serving in rural areas of Orissa are yet to learn anything from the movie ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’.

The parents of the infant whose death due to alleged negligence of the doctor on duty led to the ransacking of the Community Health Centre at Khallikote alleged that the doctor concerned had misbehaved with them.

If their bites on the new TV is to be believed the doctor’s statements towards the child and its parents were too crude and vulgar. It was as if the doctor was looking down the economic condition of the poor parents of the diseased child.

The CHC could have been saved from damages if the doctor had known how to deal with patients and people with a smile and good words of solace. Doctors should realise that their hard words during treatment hurt patients and their relatives a lot. They need words of solace instead of acrid remarks. Usually the doctors posted in rural areas cast caustic remarks at rural public due to their frustration caused due to their mental comparison with their counterparts serving in urban areas.
