SHIMLA: Sixteen people died on the spot in a road accident in Rampur on Saturday night when their jeep fell into a deep gorge at Keku, about 157 kms from here. The dead included eight women. The MUV Tempo-Trax was carrying a marriage party from Nirmand to Kumarsain in anterior Shimla. The police said when the relatives of the deceased found the car missing , they returned to the accident site by the same route in another vehicle after hearing the ringing of a mobile phone that had somehow got entangled in one of the bushes near the road. Home Guard, police personnel and a medical team rushed to the site for rescue operations, which were hampered due to pitch darkness, rough terrain and extreme cold conditions, said the police. A young boy injured in the accident has been admitted to a Government hospital at Khaneri. His is said to be out of danger. Police said the investigations are on to ascertain the cause of the accident.
