Khadi festivalInaugurating the National Khadi and Village Industries Utsav at Ramleela Maidan here, Mr. Singh said the concept of khadi, which had a special significance during the freedom struggle, should be given a new orientation to make it relevant to the present era of globalisation. “A prudent value addition to the khadi sector will not only help meet the consumers’ expectations for quality products, but would also create a strong demand in the market,” said Mr. Singh. He said there was nothing wrong in improving the khadi apparel with the help of fashion designers. The khadi festival, organised by the Khadi and Village Industries Commission, is the fifth consecutive khadi show in Jaipur. KVIC Member Ramdas Sharma said the khadi sector had provided employment to 80 lakh people across the country and was making an annual production worth Rs.14,000 crore. Polularising khadiMr. Sharma praised the State Government’s drive to renovate all Khadi Bhandars, saying it would attract more consumers and popularise the khadi garments. Noted sculptor Arjun Prajapati presented a stone statuette of Mahatma Gandhi to the Governor in the function.
