SETTING THE AGENDA: B.Suresh, chief patron, Nilgiri Rose Society (right), addressing a meeting held at Udhagamandalam on Sunday to discuss arrangements for the Rose Convention. UDHAGAMANDALAM: The Nilgiri Rose Society, which will host the annual National Rose Convention here in January 2009, convened a meeting on Sunday to set in motion the arrangements for the event. Chief patron of the society B. Suresh said though there was more than a year left for the convention, its success could be ensured only through meticulous planning. More than its success, the reputation of this vacation destination was at stake. So, the convention should be used to enhance the popularity of the hill station. The 2008 convention would be held in Indore next month. Members of the Nilgiri Rose Society would participate in it to get a hang of the organisational matters. Dr. Suresh said the encouragement of horticulture was the main objective of the society and stressed the need for providing a suitable place to the society near the Rose Garden here. Since a website planned for the convention would trigger enquiries from all over the world, it was necessary for the society to have an office at a convenient place. The 2009 convention would be more spectacular than the others because the Rose Garden here was one of the biggest of its kind in the world. The people should make the most of the event to revive the economy of the district. Society president K. Krishnakumar said the Chief of the World Federation of Rose Societies was expected to be among the delegates present at the convention. More varieties were being added to the collection at the Rose Garden. At the time of the convention, it was expected to have 4,500 varieties. Geetha Srinivasan, convenor, Indian National Trust for Art, Culture and Heritage, said a campaign to grow more roses should be launched in view of the convention. Sanjeev Sharma, president, Nilgiris Hotels and Restaurants Association, said that at the time of the convention, roses should be associated with tourism promotion.
