COIMBATORE: Anna University, Coimbatore, will offer B.E. courses through the medium of Tamil from the next academic year, Vice-Chancellor R. Radhakrishnan said on Sunday. Speaking to The Hindu after the first meeting of the Syndicate, which was held in Chennai on Wednesday, he said the Syndicate had agreed, in principle, to start the courses from August next. The final approval would come after the committee set up for the purpose submit its recommendations. The committee, led by M. Ponnavaiko, Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University, would obtain inputs from scholars of the Tamil University, Thanjavur. It might submit its report by February next. The university, he said, would begin with courses in civil, mechanical and electrical engineering, communication, computer science and information technology. “The textbooks will be in Tamil. The teachers who now teach in English will teach the content in Tamil. The first batch will have 60 students a stream. Once the courses are established, we plan to increase the intake and correspondingly the number of faculty,” he said. Though there were attempts to change the medium of instruction for professional courses, nothing had materialised. “This is the first such proposal for engineering education, and when it comes through in 2008, Anna University, Coimbatore, will be the first to implement the vernacular language as the medium of instruction,” he said.
