Lantern protest against power cut
MADURAI: The Madurai urban district unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has planned a protest campaign here from December 5 against the undeclared power cut across the State.
The executive committee of the unit that met here on Sunday condemned the power cut experienced in the State for the last six months.
In a statement, its secretary, R. Annadurai, said that power cut lasted for more than three hours daily even as the State was facing a shortage of 700 megawatt of power. The city did not have any big industrial house and had only small scale units.
“The unannounced power cut has badly affected the production units. Workers employed in these units are facing a threat of being rendered jobless,” Mr. Annadurai said. The party also expressed concern over the studies of students, who were preparing for half-yearly examination that was round the corner.
Urging the State Government to make efforts to set right the shortage immediately, the party would launch a protest demonstration carrying lanterns and candles at Subramaniapuram on December 5. The demonstration would be held at other places on December 7 and 8, the statement said.
The party MP, P. Mohan, and leaders, P. Vikraman and R. Jothiram, participated in the meeting.
