Call for stronger policing at Kowdiar Square

Staff Reporter

Kowdiar Park a haven for drug peddlers

City residents seek better traffic management

Thiruvananthapuram: Drug peddlers have made Kowdiar Park their evening haunt, according to citizen members of Maithri Surkasha, the government’s community policing initiative.

Speaking at the monthly police-citizen interaction here on Sunday, residents’ association office-bearers called for stronger police presence at Kowdiar Square. They said anti-social elements had made Jagathy High School their haven on holidays and at night time.

The meeting protested against the Police Department’s alleged failure to prevent traffic snarls in the city. Residents complained that there was a lack of sufficient policemen to regulate traffic at key junctions.

Assistant Commissioner (Cantonment) M. Sekharan inaugurated the interaction. Circle Inspector, Museum, A. L. Najmulhassan; Sub Inspectors Muhammad Hussien and Raveendran Nair; Maithri Surkasha convener Thekkumoodu Sumesh; municipal councillors Palayam Rajan and Ayesha Baker were among those who attended the meeting.

Assistant Commissioner (Shanghumughom) P. Reghunath inaugurated the resident-police interaction in Shangumugham police sub-division limits.

There is a shortage of policemen in the city because many are taking turns doing duty at Sabarimala. A considerable number of policemen will be going to Gujarat soon on duty during elections there.

The meeting called for timely maintenance of street-lights and better traffic management in the Medical College area.

The meeting praised the Medical College police for controlling crime in its area of jurisdiction.

Circle Inspector V. Suresh Kumar; municipal councillors Ajith Kumar and Sudheer; executive engineer Sudeev; and sewerage executive engineer Somaskeharan Nair were among those present at the meeting.
