NEW DELHI: The National Council of Science Museums is hosting a fortnight-long exhibition titled “Experiencing Mathematics” at the National Science Centre here beginning Monday. To be inaugurated by Prof. Bernard Heulin, Counsellor for Science and Technology, French Embassy, the aim of the exhibition is to dispel the myth that mathematics is a drab and esoteric subject that has no applications in daily life. It intends to show to all visitors that mathematics can be astonishing, interesting and useful and accessible to everyone. Also, that it plays a large part in daily life, is useful in many trades, and has an important role in our culture, development and progress. Some exhibits in the exhibition include “Shapes in nature”, “How to tile?”, “How to fill the space?”, “Numbers and secret codes”, “What can one calculate today?”, “From Pythagoras to Wiles” and “Art and mathematics”. It will also feature special teacher orientation programmes to help teachers make learning of mathematics a fun filled experience. Developed by the Centre for Science, France, in partnership with UNESCO, International Mathematical Union, International Commission on Mathematical Instruction, European Mathematical Society, Japanese Ministry of Education and The University of Tokai, Tokyo, Japan, the exhibition is scheduled to travel around the world.
