Campaign against child labour

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A meeting of the Task Force against Child Labour was organised over the weekend to raise awareness about the Child Labour Regulation and Prohibition Act-1986 among the public.

Chairing the meeting, North-West Deputy Commissioner Madhup Vyas said a pilot project had been formulated to sensitise people about the ill-effects of employing children below 14 years of age. “Anyone found to be breaching this law would be liable for a fine of Rs.20,000 or one-year imprisonment. The Government has adopted several programmes to campaign against the social evil of child labour. Banners, placards, posters, pamphlets have been pasted and distributed at various places to drive home this point.”

Mr. Vyas informed that awareness rallies on the issue were taken out in the Mangolpuri Industrial area and several Government-promoted slogans such as “Say No to Child Labour” and “Towards Education from Exploitation” were recited from loudspeakers. “Our motive is to make Delhi totally free from child labour. We have also started a helpline (1098) to aid people in promptly reporting cases of child labour,” he said.
