NEW DELHI: Seeking to explore the significance of masculinity within art practice, the School of Arts and Aesthetics at Jawaharlal Nehru University here is presenting an exhibition on “Relocating Masculinities”. The exhibition comprising photographs, videos and video installations from artists like Atul Bhalla, B.V. Suresh, Kriti Arora, Rameshwar Broota, Sheba Chhachhi and Sunil Gupta will open at the Gallery of the School on the campus this Tuesday. The exhibition has been curated by Mohd. Ahmed Sabhi, Rahul Dev, Srinayani Reddy and T. Sanathanan — all M.A. and M. Phil. students at the School of Arts and Aesthetics. The exhibition poses a patriarchal, hegemonised, homogenous masculinity in the singular in opposition to more ambivalent, freer spaces encompassed in a plural conception of masculinities, less dependent on gender or the male body. Talking about the exhibition Shukla Sawant, a faculty member at the School, explained: “Masculinities as a social category are determined by the intersection of other social categories such as race, religion, class, caste or gender. In the context of social reconfigurations, masculinity is a constantly shifting space, with the coexistence of conflicting masculinities in terms of power relations.”
The exhibition is being mounted in collaboration with a non-government organisation “Aakar” and supported by United Nations Development Programme, United Nations Population Fund and United Nations Development Fund for Women. It will be on view till December 14.
