In rhythm: Disabled persons performing cultural programme in the city on Monday.

MADURAI: Those who witnessed the cultural performance of the challenged persons at the Tamukkam grounds would have understood the significance of replacing the word ‘disabled’ with ‘differently-abled’.

The performance was organised in view of the International Day of Disabled Persons by the Department of Disabled Rehabilitation. Spectators could not believe their eyes when students of YMCA Special School for the Hearing Impaired danced to the tunes with precise timing. Such was their performance that it took minutes for the audience to realise the fact that all the performers were hearing impaired. They did not miss even a single beat.

Their movements were controlled by sign language. They swung and swirled to the tune ably orchestrated by their teacher who could be seen moving her hands to suggest the next move. It was a perfect start to more interesting performances to follow. Next to take the stage were students from UpaharMadurai, and then it was the turn of mentally challenged children from the Anbagam School to mesmerise the audience. The verve with which the students performed took the spectators by surprise. They were accurate in their movements and coordination.

Students of St. Joseph’s School for the Blind, Paravai, made their school proud by presenting a series of gymnastic routines. In between, they formed different shapes, including a human pyramid.

The performances had placed the organisers in a tight spot. For, they found it difficult to control the enthusiasm from the challenged to exhibit their talents. They had no other go but to stop the cultural performance midway to facilitate the welfare assistance distribution function but with an assurance that the cultural show would continue after the scheduled event.
