Students from 99 private and Government schools in Karaikal district in the Union Territory of Puducherry showed their talents at a three-day science exhibition conducted at V.O.C. Government Higher Secondary School in Kottucherry in Karaikal last week. The district-level science exhibition was organised by the Education department of Puducherry Government. Dr.N.Vasanthakumar, Karaikal Collector, who inaugurated the exhibition, appreciated the talents of the students from primary to higher secondary level. In all, 534 exhibits on various subjects including efficient water management practices, tsunami warning system, low-cost housing, system of rice intensification method, protection of coastal area by covering green shield, etc., were displayed by the students. G. Palani, Chief Educational Officer, Karaikal, said that students from 30 primary, 28 middle, 27 high and 14 higher secondary schools from private and Government took part in the exhibition. More than 10,000 students, teachers and parents visited the exhibition. Rotary Club donates furnitureRotary Club of New Majestic, Pudukottai, donated furniture to Government High School, Maruthanthalai, Pudukottai district. Club president D. Arulanandam gave away the furniture to school Headmaster A. Soosai. Treasurer L. Soosainathan, former president Shanmuga Palaniappan, assistant Governor of district S. Anilsamy and Rotary members Velmurugan and V. Karuppaiah spoke at the function. Children’s Day celebratedSri. Kumara Gurupa Swamigal Higher Secondary School, Adhuthurai, Thanjavur district, celebrated Children’s Day with fervour. The function was organised under the auspices of Mahatma Gandhi Children Welfare Association, Thanjavur Branch Exnora, Rotary Club, Indian Red Cross Society, Tiruvidaimaruthur Branch and Canara Bank, Aduthurai Branch. The function was presided over by president of Mahatma Gandhi Children Welfare Association R. Tamilrasan. Honorary president of Association M. Murugesan stressed the need for planned families and urged mothers to breastfeed infants. Deepa, a class IV student from Kurumbapatti, Dindigul district, recited all 1,330 verses of Tirukkural in 13 minutes. Her feat was commended during the function. Gold medals were presented to students – Mohamed Asath, Deepa and Akila – on behalf of the charitable trust of Dr. Sambasivam, Vasuki and Osman Ali. Association founder G. Sambasivam and Headmaster V. M. Baskaran spoke. Rotarians Sivasankar, Sagul Hameed, Haj Mohamed and Mahalingam were present. AIDS Day observedWorld AIDS Day was observed at Government Model Higher Secondary School, Pudukottai where about 750 students took out a rally. Chief Educational Officer S. Chellam flagged off the rally. Addressing participants, Mrs. Chellam stressed the need for AIDS awareness. School Principal S. Rajasekar administered oath to the students. Liaison Officer of National Service Scheme Muthukumaran, vice principals P. Gunasekaran, N. Muthubaskaran and K. Paramasivam spoke. Winners of various competitions conducted in connection with World AIDS Day were given away prizes and certificates. Inter-school contestThe Department of English of St. Joseph’s Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Perambalur, conducted an inter-school competition. Literary Association Arcadians invited students from various schools for Band Wagon 07. Pooma, lecturer, Thanthai Hans Roever College, Perambalur, presided over the function. Students from Montfort Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Ariyalur, Shanthiniketan Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Arumbavoor, and Swami Vivekananda Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Arumbavoor, took part in various events. There were competitions such as ‘four-in-one,’ ‘dumb charades,’ ‘if I were..,’ ‘turn court,’ ‘mime show’ and ‘ad zap’ for the higher secondary students. Most of the events tested the students’ communicative skill and leadership quality. Principal of Thanthai Hands Roever College R. Valluvan inaugurated a literary exhibition at the school. ‘The Rocking Stars,’ a team from the host school, bagged the overall championship trophy. ‘The Patriots’ from Montfort Matriculation Higher Secondary School was the runner-up. 300 models displayedMore than 300 models on varied topics were on display at the Thanjavur educational district-level science exhibition conducted by Maxwell Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Thanjavur. Nearly 700 students from Government High Schools, Government Higher Secondary Schools, Matriculation and aided schools participated in the exhibition which was inaugurated by District Revenue Officer M. Karunakaran. Models on water management, mathematical concepts and power management attracted the attention of onlookers.
