250 medicos leave hostel

Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI: About 250 inmates of K.A. P. Viswanatham Government Medical College left their hostel provisionally, following the State Government’s announcement to temporarily close down medical colleges.

An equal number of hostel students were awaiting a direction from the college administration to vacate, Tiruchi unit secretary of Tamil Nadu Medical Students and House Surgeons’ Association M. Nachiyappan said.

The government notice was sent to all medical colleges stating that “the government would order to close down the medical colleges and hostels if the students fail to withdraw the agitation before December 3.”

The college administration would close down the hostel once they receive the communication from the Directorate of Medical Education, said Medical College Dean P. Ravishankar.

Meanwhile, students resumed their relay hunger strike. Ten students commenced their ‘fast- unto-death’ demonstration on the college premises on Monday.

Expressing solidarity with the students, the Indian Medical Association has decided to seek public support by highlighting the complexities involved in implementing the mandatory rural service. State IMA president N. Mohandoss said that the association would spread information to the public about the “unplanned move that would affect the medical students and public.” Without receiving the degree, house surgeons were not eligible to work independently in rural areas as per the Medical Council of India (MCI) norms. By forcing the students to work in rural areas without a government appointment, the Union Ministry has flouted the MCI norms, Dr. Mohandoss said. A memorandum has been sent to all the 134 branches of IMA to spread the message by way of displaying notices on private clinics and hospitals and through meetings. The members of IMA would wear black badges from Wednesday as a mark of protest.
